Description

This course provides an evidence-based overview of the evaluation and management of trigger finger (stenosing tenosynovitis) for occupational and physical therapists. Participants will review current research on pathophysiology, risk factors, and differential diagnosis to better understand the condition. The course highlights conservative approaches supported by recent literature, including splinting, therapeutic exercise, activity modification, pain management, and patient education strategies. Case studies will be used to translate evidence into clinical practice.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Define trigger finger and describe the basic anatomy of the flexor tendons, pulleys, and sheath involved in its development.
  2. Recognize the clinical signs and symptoms of trigger finger across different stages of severity.
  3. Differentiate common grading/classification systems for trigger finger at a beginner level.
  4. Identify appropriate functional assessments for trigger finger
  5. Identify key risk factors and patient populations most commonly affected by trigger finger.
  6. Describe evidence-based conservative management strategies, including splinting, activity modification, and therapeutic exercises.
  7. Select an appropriate orthosis design relevant to symptoms and levels of healing.
  8. Define patient education strategies to promote adherence and self-manage.

She earned her Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy from Temple University, followed by a Master of Health Science and a Doctor of Health Science from Drexel University. Throughout her career, Laurie has contributed to the field through mentoring, program development, and professional leadership. An active member of the American Society of Hand Therapists (ASHT), she has served on multiple committees and presented nationally on a range of upper extremity topics. Laurie currently serves as Vice President of Exploring Hand Therapy/Live Conferences and is the co-editor of The Purple Book. She also enjoys teaching as an adjunct instructor at George Washington University.
